Although many posts on this blog will target new and cutting edge neuroscience and clinical neuropsychological information, I thought it would be interesting to begin these posts with information about the core of clinical neuropsychological practice.

In 2007, the American Academy of Clinical Neuropsychology, of which I am an affiliate member, published a set of formal guidelines for the practice of Neuropsychological Assessment and Consultation, which can be downloaded in pdf format through the link on this page from the AACN website. These guidelines describe "the most desirable and highest level of professional conduct for neuropsychologists when engaged in the practice of clinical neuropsychology."

Accordingly, the document discusses topics such as: definitions of clinical neuropsychology, education and training models in the field (see the description of my training program at UCLA for an example), work settings for neuropsychologists, ethical issues in practice, and methods and procedures for neuropsychological assessment and consultation.

As a referral source or potential patient, this document is a valuable resource to better understand what I do and how I do it.
